The IE Hub for Leadership and Innovation, established by IE University, one of Spain’s leading higher education institutions, was officially inaugurated in Baku. Created through a strategic partnership with PASHA Holding and SOCAR, the Hub will operate with institutional support from the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Economy.
Based at ADA University, the Hub aims to strengthen corporate collaboration, support human capital development, promote the application of new knowledge and ideas, and contribute to the growth of the entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem. While its initial activities will focus primarily on Azerbaijan, the Hub plans to expand opportunities for cooperation across Central Asia in the future.
The Hub’s activities will focus on three key areas:
Education and Development: This area will encompass undergraduate and graduate degree programmes, specialised educational opportunities for executives, and training programmes tailored to the needs of companies and organisations. One of the flagship initiatives under this pillar is the Azerbaijan Global MBA (AZEMBA) programme.
Research and Innovation: This area will focus on research into entrepreneurship, digital transformation, and regional competitiveness, alongside the study of practical case studies and the expansion of international knowledge exchange. These activities will support more informed business decision-making and the adoption of best practices in the local context.
New Venture Creation: This area will focus on fostering entrepreneurial initiatives and developing new business models. Startups, investors, and institutional partners will be connected with IE University’s international innovation network, creating a collaborative environment that helps turn promising ideas into viable business opportunities.
Speaking at the inauguration, Jalal Gasimov, Chief Executive Officer of PASHA Holding, highlighted the importance of human capital development, knowledge and experience sharing, and the promotion of innovative thinking in driving long-term economic growth and competitiveness.
“The establishment of the IE Hub in Baku is an important step towards strengthening the integration of Azerbaijan’s business environment with the international education and innovation ecosystem, unlocking the potential of local talent, and creating new opportunities for collaboration. At PASHA Holding, we believe that sustained cooperation between the private sector, academia, and international partners can make a meaningful contribution to our country’s development,” said Jalal Gasimov.
Samad Bashirli, Deputy Minister of Economy, emphasised the importance of the partnership in bringing international knowledge and expertise to Azerbaijan, strengthening links between education and business, and turning new ideas into business initiatives. He noted that the Hub would support the application of international educational practices in Azerbaijan, the development of modern management skills, and the strengthening of the business sector’s innovation capacity.
It was also highlighted that, as part of the event, the Ministry of Economy and IE University signed a Framework Cooperation Agreement on the Establishment and Development of an Economic Observatory. The agreement envisages joint research and economic analysis aimed at economic diversification, productivity growth, and enhanced competitiveness, as well as the promotion of dialogue between government, business, and academia. The cooperation will also focus on examining international best practices, expanding knowledge exchange on economic development priorities, and supporting the practical application of research findings.
Describing the opening of the Hub as an important occasion, SOCAR Vice President Ziba Mustafayeva said that IE HUB is not about a new space or a new program. It is about people. Because, ultimately, the most important investments that are made are investments in people—in their knowledge, skills, capabilities, and ability to adapt to changes, lead them, and become trend setters.
"Buildings can be constructed. Technologies can be acquired. But the people who make these things work, who bring ideas to life, who inspire others, and who turn challenges into opportunities — that is where sustainable progress begins. And that is what makes today particularly meaningful," Ziba Mustafayeva noted.
