The Crisis and Emergency Response Commission manages the issues on oil spills at SOCAR. A group of the company’s employees participated in international training organised by OSRL and were awarded certificates.
The Company has approved the 2021-2025: Oil Spill Management Plan (OSMP) to regulate the company’s activities in this regard. The plan has been developed to ensure a professional, flexible, detailed and effective response to oil spills in the company’s offshore and onshore wells. OSMP serves to protect the environment from detrimental effects during oil spills. OSMP determines the rules of coordination of the efforts of the parties, which ensure timely and effective elimination of the consequences of oil spills due to emergencies and other causes. As part of OSMP, SOCAR carried out a technical inventory of objects at risk for oil spills, and a list of enterprises at risk was determined.
The company carries out integrated offshore environmental monitoring to study the dynamics of industrial activity on the environment on SOCAR-operated fields of the Azerbaijan sector of the Caspian Sea. Monitoring is carried out once a year in accordance with the plan for checking oil and oil product spills, and in case of an oil spill, immediately after the incident, based on the sampling procedure and requirements of the laboratory management system.
The mapping of habitats and natural resources of terrestrial and coastal species is considered one of the important elements for eliminating pollution caused by oil spills to protect areas with sensitive biodiversity and of special importance.
