The Polypropylene (PP) Plant is one of the production facilities of SOCAR Polymer, which was established on 16 July 2013. The foundation of the Polypropylene Plant was laid in October 2015 by President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev. The plant was commissioned on 18 July 2018 at an opening ceremony attended by President Ilham Aliyev and President of Italy Sergio Mattarella.
Together with the High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Plant, the PP Plant is the final link in an integrated economic value chain that also includes the Heydar Aliyev Oil Refinery and the Ethylene-Polyethylene Plant of Azerikimya Production Union. Linking these enterprises as feedstock suppliers to one another within the value chain ensures their high operational efficiency.
Operating on technology licensed from LyondellBasell, the PP Plant meets high standards in terms of production process and product quality. The plant has an annual production capacity of 184 thousand tonnes. To ensure the high quality of its polymer grades and customer satisfaction, the plant operates an on-site laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that carries out a range of tests 24/7.
The PP Plant produces polypropylene homopolymer, random ethylene-propylene copolymer and heterophasic ethylene-propylene copolymer.
Homopolymer grades produced include HB2500GP, HB3500GP, HB4500GP, HB6500GP and others. Homopolymers are used in the production of many mobile accessories and various household items. Grades known in the polymer industry as "raffia", such as HB0256FR and HB0356FR, are used to produce polymer yarns of various sizes for agricultural and household use. HB2659FC and similar grades are used in the production of carpets and textile products used in everyday life. The PP Plant also produces the HB2662FS grade, which is used in the extrusion of nonwoven fabrics and in the production of various types of medical fabric masks.
Heterophasic block ethylene-propylene copolymer grades, such as CB1640MO, CB2248MO, CB3648MO, CB4848MO and CB6448MO, offer good processability across different processing speeds and good rigidity. They are used to produce non-transparent boxes, sporting goods, toys and household items for various purposes. In addition, the CB0900MO grade is used in the automotive industry to produce high-rigidity, impact-resistant automotive parts and battery cases. The CB0140BM and CB0120BM grades are used in blow molding to produce various pipes, boxes, panels and profiles with high rigidity and good frost and impact resistance.
The PP Plant also produces random ethylene-propylene copolymer grades, such as RB3545MO, RB4545MO and RB6545MO. These grades are designed for producing transparent, high-rigidity household containers and containers of various sizes by thin-wall injection molding.
While most of its polypropylene output is intended for export, the products are also in steady demand on the domestic market. As of January 2024, the company's PP export geography covered a total of 18 countries, including Ukraine, Türkiye, China, Austria, Poland, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Thailand, Romania, Belgium, Nigeria and Peru, as well as several CIS countries. The first overseas sale was made to Türkiye in October 2018.
