SOCAR supports development of chess not only in our country, but also in the entire region in the capacity of a partner of the Azerbaijani national chess team and organiser of international tournaments within the framework of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects. The company sponsored Vugar Hashimov Memorial chess tournaments in 2021 and 2022. Fabiano Caruana, the US representative became the winner of the 7th international super tournament dedicated to the dear memory of the outstanding Azerbaijani chess player.

The first international chess tournament was organised in our liberated lands in 2022 through support of SOCAR. The Shusha Chess 2022 international chess tournament, in which SOCAR was the main sponsor and held jointly with the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijan Chess Federation and the Shusha City State Reserve Department, was won by Azerbaijani chess player Shahriyar Mammadyarov among men and Meri Arabidze (Georgia) among women.

In the course of 2023 World Cup hosted by Azerbaijan with the sponsorship support of SOCAR and contested by 206 most renowned intellectuals across the globe, Nijat Abasov, representative of Azerbaijan advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament thanks to consecutive victories, but was defeated in the semi-finals by Magnus Carlsen, considered to be the strongest chess player of the world.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) highly appreciated the organisation of the Chess World Cup held in Baku and expressed its gratitude to Azerbaijan.
