The only Methanol plant in the Caucasus is located in the Garadagh district of Baku and has been operational since 2013. It is the first gas-chemical production facility in the country. UK’s ICI low-pressure methanol production technology was used during the construction of the plant.
In November 2016, SOCAR Methanol LLC, a SOCAR subsidiary, took over the management of the plant. Since October 2018 it has been incorporated into SOCAR's structure and is currently operating as the SOCAR Methanol Plant. Nearly 400 employees are employed at the factory, which has an annual production capacity of 650-700 thousand tons. The average age of the employees is 36 years old.
99.99 percent methyl alcohol, is considered an A-class product and is the purest methanol in the world. The quality of internationally standardized and certified methanol is regularly monitored by the plant’s own laboratory and internationally recognized inspection bodies The plant has storage of over 48,000 metric tons of ready-made products to ensure timely delivery and high-quality customer service.
95 percent of SOCAR’s Methanol output is exported strengthening the country's export potential. Turkey, Western Europe and the Mediterranean countries are the main customers. The plant location is a key advantage in the effective transportation of the product to international markets. It also satisfies the growing requirements of the domestic market.
In addition to intermediate products in the gas-chemical industry the plant has already begun manufacturing end consumer products, including analytical methanol used in laboratories as a chemical reagent. It is available in various size tares/containers/tanks.
During the production process, safety measures are implemented on the principle of zero defect. The equipment is constantly under technical control to ensure this level is maintained. The threefold safety system provides the plant’s 9-magnitude earthquake resistance.
