The Kurovdagh field is located 120 km SW of Baku in the Lower Kura Petroleum Province. The field was originally developed by a joint venture starting on September 1, 1997, and since October 5, 2009 it has been operated by the Shirvan Operating Company Limited.

The agreement covers an area 115 km2. From 1997 to April 1, 2011, 1153 had been drilled in the field.

The central part of the oilfield is covered with mud volcanoes, and there are surface shows of gas and oil in the volcanoes. The Exploration Well 2 which discovered the Kurovdagh field produced 31 tons of oil from the Pay Zone 1 horizon on June 18, 1955. Afterwards, a large number of wells were drilled in the central part of the field.

Later on, an abundance of oil was found in the north-west and south-east parts of the field. Cumulative oil production as of January 1, 2011 from the Kurovdagh field was 39.3 million tons.
