In February 2012, the Statute of Baku Higher Oil School was registered by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Azerbaijan. In May 2012, the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan granted a special license to the Higher School for specialist training. On April 10, 2012, Elmar Gasimov was appointed the Rector of the Baku Higher Oil School by the relevant decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev.
On May 1, 2017, President Ilham Aliyev attended the inauguration of the BHOS new campus, the largest one in the Caucasus region. The President praised the activities of the Higher School during the opening ceremony by saying: “It is very significant day in the life of our country today. We are celebrating the opening of a campus of Baku Higher Oil School. It meets the highest standards. Baku Higher Oil School has been operating for six years. It has been very successful. Over these years, the school has earned itself a worthy place in the sphere of education in Azerbaijan. The school moves to a new campus, a new building today. All the conditions are available here to study and master knowledge. The most modern technologies have been applied. All the buildings are beautiful and built with taste. There are sophisticated laboratories here, and I have been familiarized with them. The level of education here will meet the highest standards.”
BHOS offers bachelor’s degree programs to the students admitted to the Higher School upon the results of the entrance test exams arranged by the State Examination Centre in four specializations including Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Automation Engineering and Information Security. Education is carried in English in accordance with the requirements of the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System. With this purpose, Baku Higher Oil School has developed close cooperation with Heriot-Watt University (Great Britain).
In the first year of study, the BHOS undergraduates attend intensive courses of English language and information communication technologies. After completion of the Foundation program, they are enrolled in four-year bachelor degree programs according to their specialization. The education programs are taught by Azerbaijani and foreign professors and teachers. The Baku Higher Oil School also offers master’s programs in Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Process Automation Engineering and Business Administration (MBA course).
Providing the students with deep theoretical knowledge and on-the-job training is one of the main objectives of the Higher School. To gain practical experience, each year the BHOS undergraduates undertake an internship at SOCAR Headquarters, Petkim Petrokimya Holding A.Ş. and STAR Refinery in Turkey, SOCAR Polymer, SOCAR Umid LLC, Azneft and Azerkimya Production Unions, BP, Halliburton, Maire Tecnimont and other leading companies operating in the oil and gas industry.
In 2018/2019 academic year, all 13 prospective students who earned 700 points during the entrance exams for the first specialty group selected to study at the Higher School. The minimal passing score for those willing to study Information Security at BHOS was 685 points (government scholarship) and because of this score indicator, it became a Specialty of the Year in Azerbaijan. Statistical data on the average score earned by the prospective students enrolled in BHOS in 2018/2019 academic year is provided below.
In 2018/2019 academic year, all 26 first-year students in the first specialty group awarded Presidential Scholarship became undergraduates of the Higher School. Statistical data about number of the Presidential Scholarship holders admitted to BHOS in 2012-2018 is provided below.
BHOS is the only higher education institution in Azerbaijan that has been awarded ISO 9001 (Quality Management Systems), ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems), OHSAS 18001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems), and ISO 10002 (Quality management, Customer satisfaction, Guidelines for complaints handling in organizations) Certificates.
The Higher School hosted its first graduation ceremony in 2017 and conducted the second one in 2018. All BHOS alumni who wanted to start their engineering career are currently employed. They work at various companies including SOCAR, Petkim Petrokimya Holding A.Ş. and STAR Refinery in Turkey, Heydar Aliyev Oil Refinery, SOCAR Polymer, SOCAR Umid LLC, Azneft and Azerkimya Production Unions, BP, Halliburton and Maire Tecnimont. Those graduates who decided to continue their education currently pursue their Master or PhD degree at leading universities in Azerbaijan and abroad.
Within the framework of close cooperation with many well-known international universities, Baku Higher Oil School implements student and teacher exchange programs. Under the Erasmus+ student exchange program, the BHOS undergraduates are given an opportunity to study in Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and Spain.
Baku Higher Oil School successfully operates School of Project Management (SPM), which is a joint project of BHOS, BP and British company STRATEX. The SPM teaching program consisting of seven training modules is based on the curriculum of the George Washington University (USA). Upon successful completion of the program, the SPM graduates receive Master certificates from the George Washington University. As of today, three groups of trainees graduated from the School of Project Management.
Today, with a view of training professional engineers in the country, BHOS enjoys high-level cooperation with the largest international companies such as SOCAR, BP, ABB, Emerson, Schneider Electric, Maire Tecnimont, Halliburton, Microsoft, Schlumberger, Statoil, Total, DAAD, Avandsis Group, and this creates an opportunity for BHOS to train specialists in line with international standards.
